If one still does not proceed, one should settle the mind through calming and contemplation, turning them skillfully, and cultivating either calming or contemplation as expedients. If one contemplates a single thought-moment of dhyāna, with the two extremes quiesced, this is called 'calming that embodies the real'; illuminating dharmatā as pure, unobstructed, and unimpeded is called 'contemplation that is identical with emptiness'. Furthermore, contemplating the dhyāna mind as both identical with emptiness and identical with the provisional, doubly illuminating the two truths without moving from the true limit, is called 'calming that accords with conditions'; penetrating medicines and diseases and meeting them appropriately is called 'contemplation that is identical with the provisional'. Furthermore, contemplating the dhyāna mind deeply—where the dhyāna mind is identical with emptiness, identical with the provisional, and identical with the middle, without duality or distinction—is called 'calming of non-discrimination'; penetrating to true reality, the tathāgatagarbha, and the truth of the supreme meaning as without duality or distinction is called 'contemplation that is identical with the middle'. The three calmings and three contemplations exist in a single thought-moment of the mind, neither before nor after, neither one nor different. In order to break the two extremes, they are called 'one' and called 'the middle'; in order to break biased attachments to arising and ceasing, they are called 'perfect' and 'quiescence'; in order to break the sequential three calmings and three contemplations, they are called 'the three contemplations in a single mind'. In reality, there are no fixed marks of middle, perfect, or single mind. One settles one's mind with these calmings and contemplations (and so forth).
