If contemplation does not bring awakening, one should again arouse loving-kindness and compassion: this principle is tranquil, yet sentient beings arouse delusion; avidyā and proliferation conceal the tathāgatagarbha, [forming a] dense forest of afflictions. Therefore, one arouses compassion to eradicate fundamental, heavy suffering. Furthermore, avidyā is itself dharmatā, and afflictions are themselves bodhi. Wishing to cause sentient beings to be identical with the real in the midst of phenomenal affairs and have their dharmakāya become manifest, one therefore arouses loving-kindness and bestows ultimate bliss. When such vows are pure and genuine, seeking the Buddha path above and transforming sentient beings below, unmixed with poison, unskewed and unperverted, without dependence, and departing from the two extremes, this is called 'arousing the bodhicitta'. When this mind is aroused, one awakens豁然, just as a swift horse, seeing the shadow of the whip, immediately takes the correct path.
