Regarding "having internal form, one observes external form": without destroying or rupturing internal form, one internally contemplates white bones, skin, and flesh, and externally contemplates corpses and the like. The marks of cultivation are fully explained in the Chanmen. Here we briefly show the marks of manifestation. The practitioner suddenly sees the toes of his own feet with skin swelling like bubbles, gradually reaching the calves, the waist, and throughout the body to the crown of the head. In an instant it becomes swollen and rigid; the entire body is distended and tight, the five toes splayed, both legs like pillars, the waist and belly like a jar, the head like a basin, bloated everywhere like a leather bag filled with wind. When this mark manifests, it moves either from the feet to the crown or from the crown to the feet, filling the whole rope-bed; the skin is tight and the flesh cracked, on the verge of bursting. Once burst, pus flows out, soaking, wetting, and dissolving. Then from crown to feet, the skin and flesh spontaneously slough off, leaving only the white bones; the joints support one another, standing immovably firm. The fallen skin and flesh gather in one place, like a heap of worms, filthy, vile, and repulsive. When this mark manifests, one deeply loathes one's body, abhorring it like feces; how much less would one give rise to stingy attachment toward wife, children, wealth, and treasures?
