The Bodhisattva offering his body [to the tigress] or those killed by the deer-stick ascetic all attained this contemplation. Internally they did not reckon a self; externally they did not cherish possessions; bowing their heads in shame, their minds of aversion continued without interruption (and so forth). The Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra states: "Removing the skin and flesh, clearly contemplate the white bones; between each and every joint, let mindfulness be bound, observing forward and backward to make the bones pure and clean." This is named "the mark of having internal form." "Observing external form" means externally seeing corpses bloated, purulent, and decaying, filling an entire village or an entire country. Because it is the impurity contemplated in the preceding nine thoughts, it is said to "observe external form." Its rank is in the concentration of the desire realm. As this practice progresses, one sees the bones give rise to four colors—blue, yellow, white, and dove-gray—flashing and glimmering, on the verge of manifesting yet not fully manifested. The blue color with blue light, and so on up to the dove-gray color with dove-gray light, are like flowing water; the light envelops the skeleton like dust and mist around the sun in a mirror. If the mind focuses on the feet, the light moves downward accordingly; if the mind focuses on the head, the light moves upward accordingly. By the power of the blue light, it outshines the ten directions so that all are seen as blue, just as Mount Sumeru colors each direction uniformly; and so on up to the dove-gray color, which is also like this. When this light and color are on the verge of manifesting yet not fully manifested, the rank is in the concentration of the threshold stage.
