If a person activates great impurity, their entry into liberation is also great, subsumed under the first dhyāna. If internally there is no skeleton and externally one contemplates the eight colors along with both environmental and primary recompense, because the objective realm is vast, it is called the second great liberation, subsumed under the second dhyāna. If by means of great impurity one enters the pure liberation, it is also great, up to and including the liberation of cessation. As for the great bases of mastery, they further ripen the liberations, bringing about mastery over the transformation of objects. The *Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa* explains that dull persons, having completed the eight liberations, only then cultivate the bases of mastery and the totalities (kṛtsnāyatana); those of medium faculties, having completed the three liberations, cultivate the bases of mastery and so on in the fourth dhyāna; those of sharp faculties, upon cultivating merely the first liberation, cultivate all phenomena. Here, the explanation follows the middle path.
