Regarding 'many or few': this again relates to environmental and primary recompense; one corpse is few, two corpses are many, and one may understand successive increases in this way. One garment, one meal, or one mountain or river is few; immeasurable garments, meals, mountains, and rivers are many. Initial practice proceeds from few to many, and the present manifestation should likewise be so. Regarding 'beautiful or ugly': being handsome through wholesome karma is beautiful, while being base and repulsive through unwholesome karma is ugly. Both of these are beautiful to those who regard them favorably, and ugly to those who regard them unfavorably. Both possessing wisdom is beautiful, and both possessing foolishness is ugly. Both being wealthy and noble is beautiful, and being poor and lowly is ugly. Such beauty and ugliness are both impure. Mountains, rivers, countries, clothing, food, and dwellings, whether beautiful or ugly, are all impure. Furthermore, both environmental and primary recompense are ugly, while the eight colors emitted by the skeleton are beautiful. Moreover, the eight colors are also ugly, while their refined state is beautiful. Both beautiful and ugly are impure. These two bases of mastery are subsumed under the first dhyāna.
