Regarding 'superior knowledge and vision': this mind surpasses form and is not bound by form; because the mind can transform form, it is called 'superior knowledge.' As for 'superior vision': pure, impure, and the like are all under the mastery of one's own mind, and the contemplative understanding is perfected, hence it is called 'superior vision.' These two are subsumed under the second dhyāna. When the bases of mastery are accomplished, one does not even begrudge one's own body, let alone material possessions or the bodies of others. When ancient worthies abdicated their thrones, ceded their kingdoms, returned oxen, or washed their ears, it was all because they had practiced this contemplation in past lives; it naturally became their innate disposition, free of all craving and defilement. Without grasping this meaning, people are greedy unto death; how could they dismiss glory and relinquish their stations?
