The latter four bases of mastery are accomplished in the fourth dhyāna. In the third dhyāna, bliss is abundant, so transformation cannot occur. In terms of the Śrāvaka teachings, it is said to be thus; but in the Bodhisattva teachings, transformation occurs in every dhyāna—how could it be absent? The *Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa* speaks of 'blue, yellow, red, and white,' which follows real phenomena; the *Yingluo jing* speaks of 'earth, water, fire, and wind,' which follows provisional designations; the two mutually subsume each other. In these four bases of mastery, internal and external forms are exhausted, leaving only the eight colors; there is only transformation in terms of many and few, without transformation in terms of beautiful and ugly.
