Seventh, the realm of contemplating views: not one is called 'various'; perverted understanding is called 'views'. Understanding and knowing is also the meaning of 'views'. When one infers the principle improperly, yet biased views are distinct and one forms a definitive understanding, this is called a 'view'. Now, those who study by listening recite the names and characteristics, forming understanding aligned with the text; their mind's eye does not open, completely lacking contemplation of principle. Those who rely on the text survive [only in words], while those without realization perish. Those who practice dhyāna value only contemplation of principle, their minds blending with whatever they touch; yet they are dark regarding names and characteristics, not knowing a single phrase. Reciters of texts keep watch by the stump, while those of open sensibility attain wondrous awakening; both houses lack something, and both their evaluations fall short.
