If for the two vehicles, using the nine notions, the ten notions, the eight liberations, and the nine successive absorptions—these are mostly phenomenal dhyāna, which in a preliminary sense are the characteristics of calming; the wisdom of the four truths with production is the characteristic of contemplation. Although this calming and contemplation transcends birth and death, it is a clumsy salvation, extinguishing form to enter emptiness. This emptiness may also be called 'calming', and may also be called 'neither calming nor non-calming', but it cannot be called 'contemplation'. Why? Because the body is reduced to ashes and wisdom is extinguished, it is not called contemplation. It is merely the analysis of dharmas taking the undefiled as its characteristic, which is not what is discussed now.
