Second, generating deep shame and conscience: not seeing the principle of the three truths within one's own mind is called [the ground for] 'shame and conscience'. Let us discuss human and divine [states] in terms of contemplation of principle: feeling shame before people of dry wisdom and the stage of nature; feeling conscience before the pure devas of the four fruits, people of the thirty minds, the meaning-devas of the ten stages, people of the five ranks and purification of the six sense faculties, and the devas of the forty-two stages. For example, obtaining retribution through intentional effort is called 'human'; spontaneous karmic retribution is called 'deva'. The two kinds of devas and humans are also like this: the path of skillful means is called 'human'; the manifestation of true reality is called 'deva'. When the mind of views creates transgressions, obscuring the principle of the three truths, one does not equal the three kinds of humans and devas; therefore one feels shame and conscience, overturning and shattering the mindset lacking shame and conscience.
