Having faith that the principle of the three truths is the mother of the Buddhas of the three periods, capable of producing all the ten powers, fearlessnesses, vimokṣas, and samādhis, and cultivating solely the smṛtyupasthānas without seeking other dharmas—this is termed the 'faculty of faith'. As for exertion, through faith one gathers all dharmas; because of faith in all dharmas, one redoubles one's diligence in exertion. As for mindfulness, one is mindful solely of the correct and supporting path, not allowing the wrong and deceptive to gain entry. Furthermore, this dharma is cultivated by exertion, and this dharma is not forgotten; hence it is termed the 'faculty of mindfulness'. As for concentration, one engages in exertion with a single-mindedly quiescent and concentrated mind. Furthermore, this dharma is gathered by mindfulness, and this dharma is unforgotten and unmoving; hence it is termed the 'faculty of concentration'. As for wisdom, the wisdom of the smṛtyupasthānas is gathered by the dharma of concentration, its internal nature illuminating itself without learning from another; this is termed the 'faculty of wisdom'. Solely cultivating the five faculties, one can also enter the path and achieve the Mahāyāna. If one does not enter, one advances to cultivate the five powers (bala): causing the faculties to grow and warding off all afflictions is termed 'power'.
