When the mind is flighty and agitated, one uses the factor of awakening of tranquilization to tranquilize coarseness of body and speech; uses the factor of awakening of equanimity to relinquish contemplative wisdom; and enters dhyāna with a concentrated mind. When the mind is sinking, exertion, investigation of dharmas, and joy arouse it. Mindfulness connects and focuses on both situations. Cultivating these seven factors of awakening, one immediately attains entry into the path. The Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa says: 'If one abandons the five hindrances and single-mindedly cultivates the seven factors of awakening, for one not to enter is impossible.' If one does not enter, one cultivates the eightfold noble path.
