If the four dhyānas all take the factor of one-pointedness of mind as their substance, how are the four different? Now, classifying the first dhyāna, it is the one-pointedness of mind belonging to applied and sustained thought; hence there are four distinctions. If one advances to the second dhyāna, merely by reproaching applied and sustained thought, the first dhyāna is destroyed, and the distinct meaning becomes increasingly clear. If taken broadly, they identically use one-pointedness of mind as substance. Explaining the names and meanings of the five factors as equal is detailed in the Xiuzheng, and so forth.
