Next, within hearing the immeasurable and producing four understandings, they all take the stages of subduing [delusions] and the stage of emerging from provisionality to be called immeasurable, because severing delusions and realizing truth is not the immeasurable. First, producing [the understanding of] arising and perishing—the expedients of the two vehicles and the three [countless] kalpas of the bodhisattva are universally called immeasurable; hence it brings up the contemplation of the sixteen truths in the ordinary stage. In producing [the understanding of] non-arising, it is also that the three vehicles together subdue [delusions], and the bodhisattva benefits others. In producing [the understanding of] the immeasurable, it is divided into two sentences: the first sentence is in the [ten] practices, and the next sentence is in the [ten] dedications of merit. That each sentence says "also" means: in the first sentence, delusions within the three realms are not yet exhausted, and furthermore delusions beyond the realms are subdued, hence it says "also". In the lower sentence, dust-and-sand delusions are not yet exhausted, and furthermore ignorance is subdued, so again it says "also". Therefore, the Shiniandachu says: "The [ten] abodes sever [delusions of] view and thought." Furthermore, they sever the superior grade of dust-and-sand delusions beyond the realms; the ten practices [sever] the intermediate grade, and the ten dedications of merit [sever] the inferior grade. Now, in clarifying the immeasurable, the ten abodes are not taken. In producing [the understanding of] the uncreated, stating "subduing and severing" means that after faith, properly subduing is the expedient for severing, hence it says "subduing and severing". Entering the abodes is proper severing, which is not the meaning of immeasurable. That the four kinds each receive the name "immeasurable" is like rivers when compared to the ocean: all can be said to have immeasurable water, yet the amount of water is not without more or less.
