The two characters "Zhizhe" refer to the master of the teaching. In childhood his name was Guangdao, also called Wangdao; these names were established based on auspicious omens at his birth. His Dharma name was Zhiyi. Yi means tranquil. That is to say, after he left the household, his master established this appellation for him based on his virtues, hence using the meaning of tranquil. Later, when he conferred the bodhisattva precepts upon the Prince of Jin, he thereupon established a Dharma appellation for the prince, saying: "Great King! In reverently following the sacred prohibitions, your name is Zongchi (Dhāraṇī)." The prince said: "The master transmits the lamp of the Buddha's Dharma; he is called Zhizhe (the Wise One)." Here it follows this later account, and so says Zhizhe.
