"The Dharma was transmitted to Āryadeva." Deva once entered a temple of Maheśvara. In the temple was an image made of gold, sixty feet high, with lapis lazuli eyes; it had great spiritual efficacy, granting whatever was prayed for, glaring and rolling its eyes. Deva addressed it: "A spirit is indeed a spirit! Originally, one instructs beings through spiritual essence, yet you borrow gold and lapis lazuli to overawe and deceive the world—how base this is!" He then climbed a ladder and gouged out the spirit's eyes. Everyone said: "The spirit has been humiliated." Deva said: "If you wish to know the wisdom of the spirit, it inherently has no pride; the spirit knows my mind, so what humiliation could there be?" At night he prepared a lavish offering, and the next day sacrificed to the spirit. The spirit appeared as a flesh-and-blood body without a left eye. Coming to the sacrifice, it sighed: "To be able to make offerings and provisions is truly rare. Yet I have no eye; why not offer an eye?" Deva immediately gouged out his own eye and offered it; as soon as he gouged it out another grew, offering a total of ten thousand eyes. The spirit was overjoyed and asked what wish he sought. Deva said: "My words rely on nothing else, yet people do not yet believe and accept them." The spirit said: "As you wish," and immediately vanished. The spiritual truth was communicated, and all believed and submitted. Only one non-Buddhist harbored hatred: "You used an empty knife to destroy my doctrine; I will use an iron knife to pierce your belly." With his five viscera on the ground, his life had not yet ceased; he gave his three robes to him and told him to flee quickly, and also spoke to his pursuers on impermanence and other truths: "I produced this through karma, and now in return I receive this through karma; why are you distressed?" Having spoken, he entered extinction.
