Fifth, cultivating calming and contemplation to equalize concentration and wisdom. When the practitioner sits in meditation, because of cultivating calming, or because of cultivating contemplation, they enter dhyāna-concentration. Although they manage to enter concentration, they lack contemplative wisdom; this is foolish concentration, incapable of severing fetters. Or if contemplative wisdom is meager, it cannot give rise to true wisdom, sever the fetters and entanglements, or manifest the approaches to the Dharma. At that time, one should cultivate contemplation to analyze and break through; then concentration and wisdom will be equalized, able to sever the fetters and entanglements and realize the approaches to the Dharma. When the practitioner sits in meditation, if because of cultivating contemplation the mind suddenly awakens and opens, and wisdom is clear, but the mind of concentration is meager, the mind will move and scatter like a lamp in the wind, not illuminating objects clearly, incapable of escaping birth and death; at that time, one should again cultivate calming. Because of cultivating calming, one attains the mind of concentration, like a lamp in a closed room, which can dispel darkness and illuminate objects clearly. This is a brief explanation of cultivating calming and contemplation to equalize the two dharmas of concentration and wisdom. If the practitioner can thus, in the midst of sitting upright and proper, skillfully use these five rounds of the meaning of cultivating calming and contemplation, taking up and letting go without losing suitability, one should know that this person skillfully cultivates the Buddha Dharma. Because they can cultivate skillfully, they will certainly not pass this single lifetime in vain.
