Fifth, engaging in action: When acting, one should think thus: "For what matter do I wish to act in this way now? If for unwholesome or indeterminate matters, I ought not to act. If for matters of wholesome benefit, I ought to act." How is it called cultivating calming while acting? When acting, one should immediately thoroughly know: because of acting, there are all wholesome, unwholesome, and other phenomena, yet not a single phenomenon can be grasped; deluded thoughts then do not arise. This is called cultivating calming. How is it called cultivating contemplation when acting? One should think thus: "Through the mind directing the body and hands to perform various tasks, because of this there are all wholesome, unwholesome, and other phenomena; therefore it is termed acting." Reflexively contemplating the mind that acts, one sees no appearance [of it]. One should know that the actor and all phenomena within acting are ultimately empty and tranquil. This is called cultivating contemplation.
