Fourth, reclining: When reclining, one should think thus: "For what matter do I wish to recline now? If for unwholesome, heedless, or other matters, I ought not to recline. If reclining in order to harmonize the four great elements, I should recline like the lion king." How does one cultivate calming while reclining? When lying down to rest, one should thoroughly know: because of reclining, there are all wholesome, unwholesome, and other phenomena, yet not a single phenomenon can be grasped; deluded thoughts then do not arise. This is called cultivating calming. How does one cultivate contemplation while reclining? One should think thus: "Due to weariness and fatigue, one immediately falls into darkness and gives free rein to the six emotional faculties; because of this, there are all defilements, wholesome, unwholesome, and other phenomena." One should then reflexively contemplate the mind that reclines, yet see no appearance [of it]. One should know that the recliner and all phenomena within reclining are ultimately empty and tranquil. This is called cultivating contemplation.
