First, cultivating calming when the eye sees forms: As one sees forms, they are like the moon in the water, without fixed reality. If seeing forms that are agreeable, one does not give rise to greed and love; if seeing forms that are disagreeable, one does not give rise to anger and vexation; if seeing forms that are neither disagreeable nor agreeable, one does not give rise to ignorance and various confused thoughts. This is called cultivating calming. How is it called cultivating contemplation when the eye sees forms? One should think thus: "Whatever is seen, its mark is immediately empty and tranquil. Why is that? In the midst of those faculties, objects, empty space, and light, each has nothing seen and also no discrimination; with the coming together of causes and conditions, eye consciousness arises, followed by the arising of mental consciousness, which can then discriminate various forms. Because of this, there are all defilements, wholesome, unwholesome, and other phenomena." One should then reflexively contemplate the mind that thinks of forms, yet see no appearance [of it]. One should know that the seer and all phenomena are ultimately empty and tranquil. This is called cultivating contemplation.
