Second, cultivating calming when the ear hears sounds: Whatever sound is heard, one immediately knows the sound is like an echo. If hearing agreeable sounds, one does not give rise to love; if hearing disagreeable sounds, one does not give rise to anger; if hearing sounds that are neither disagreeable nor agreeable, one does not give rise to a discriminating mind. This is called cultivating calming. How does one cultivate contemplation while hearing sounds? One should think thus: "Whatever sound is heard is empty and non-existent; merely from the conjunction of faculty and object, ear consciousness arises; next, mental consciousness arises, forcefully generating discrimination. Because of this, there are all defilements, wholesome, unwholesome, and other phenomena; therefore it is termed hearing sounds." Reflexively contemplating the mind that hears sounds, one sees no appearance [of it]. One should know that the hearer and all phenomena are ultimately empty and tranquil. This is called contemplation.
