Fifth, cultivating calming when the body experiences tangible objects: Whatever touch is sensed, one immediately knows it is like a shadow, illusory and unreal. If experiencing agreeable, pleasurable touch, one does not give rise to greed and attachment; if experiencing disagreeable, painful touch, one does not give rise to anger and vexation; if experiencing touch that is neither disagreeable nor agreeable, one does not give rise to conceptualizing discrimination. This is called cultivating calming. How does one cultivate contemplation when the body experiences tangible objects? One should think thus: "Phenomena such as lightness, heaviness, cold, warmth, roughness, and smoothness are termed touch; the six parts beginning with the head are termed the body. The nature of touch is provisional, and the body is also not real; with the coming together of causes and conditions, body consciousness arises. Next, mental consciousness arises, conceptualizing and discriminating marks such as pain and pleasure; therefore it is termed experiencing touch." Reflexively contemplating the mind that conditions touch, one sees no appearance [of it]. One should know that the receiver of touch and all phenomena are ultimately empty and tranquil. This is called cultivating contemplation.
