Fourth, cultivating calming when the tongue receives tastes: Whatever taste is experienced, one immediately knows it is like experiencing taste in a dream or illusion. If obtaining an agreeable fine taste, one does not give rise to greed and attachment; if obtaining a disagreeable bad taste, one does not give rise to anger; if obtaining a taste that is neither disagreeable nor agreeable, one does not give rise to discriminating thoughts. This is called cultivating calming. How is it called cultivating contemplation when the tongue receives tastes? One should think thus: "The taste experienced now is truly ungraspable. Why is that? The six internal and external tastes have no nature of discrimination. Because the internal tongue faculty conjoins [with them], tongue consciousness arises. Next, mental consciousness arises, forcefully seizing the mark of the taste. Because of this, there are all defilements, wholesome, unwholesome, and other phenomena." Reflexively contemplating the consciousness that conditions tastes, one sees no appearance [of it]. One should know that the receiver of taste and all phenomena are ultimately empty and tranquil. This is called cultivating contemplation.
