1. Signs of the manifestation of the wholesome roots of the path of breath. Because the practitioner skillfully cultivates calming and contemplation, the body and mind become harmonized and comfortable, and delusive thoughts are stilled and cease. Because of this, one spontaneously perceives one's mind gradually entering concentration, generating concentrations such as [that of] the desire realm and the unarrived stage. Body and mind become completely empty and tranquil, and the concentrated mind is secure and stable. Within this concentration, one does not see any characteristics of body or mind at all. Thereafter, whether passing through one sitting, two sittings, or even one day, two days, one month, or two months, [the concentration] cannot be held back, yet does not regress or become lost. Then, right within concentration, one suddenly perceives motion in the body and mind, and the eight touches manifest—namely, perceiving in the body pain, itching, cold, warmth, lightness, heaviness, roughness, smoothness, and so forth. When these touches manifest, body and mind are stable and calm, ethereal, joyful, pleasantly pleased, and purely blissful beyond metaphor. This is known as the signs of the manifestation of the wholesome roots of the fundamental dhyāna-concentrations of the path of breath. Or, within the desire realm or the unarrived stage, the practitioner may suddenly perceive the length and shortness of the breath entering and exiting, and all the pores throughout the body become open and hollow. Then with the mind's eye one sees the thirty-six components inside the body, just like opening a granary and seeing various hemp seeds, beans, and so forth. The mind is filled with great surprise and joy, tranquil, peaceful, and pleasant. This is known as the signs of the manifestation of the wholesome roots of following the breath and the extraordinary stages.
