Once the practitioner has recognized these demonic affairs, they should immediately repel them. There are two methods of repelling: First, repelling them through cultivating calming. Whenever seeing any external evil demonic state, know them all to be false and deceptive; do not sorrow and do not fear, nor grasp nor abandon them with delusive calculation and discrimination. Still the mind in serene quietude, and they will naturally vanish of themselves. Second, repelling them through cultivating contemplation. If, upon seeing the various demonic states described above, they do not depart through calming, one should then turn contemplation back upon the mind that is able to see: seeing no location for it, what is there to be afflicted? When contemplating in this way, they will vanish shortly. If they are slow to depart, simply correct the mind, do not give rise to thoughts of fear, do not spare body or life, and remain unmoved in correct mindfulness. Know that the suchness of the realm of Māra is itself the suchness of the Buddha realm; if the realm of Māra is suchness and the Buddha realm is suchness, there is one suchness and not two suchnesses. When understood in this way, there is nothing to abandon in the realm of Māra and nothing to grasp in the Buddha realm; the Buddha-Dharma will naturally appear, and demonic states will naturally dissolve and vanish.
