Furthermore, if one sees demonic states not vanishing, there is no need to give rise to sorrow; if one sees them vanish, neither should one give rise to joy. Why is this? One has never seen a seated meditator seeing a demon transform into a tiger or wolf and come to eat them, nor has one ever seen a demon transform into a man or woman to become husband or wife. When such illusory transformations appear, foolish people fail to understand, and their minds give rise to panic and produce greedy attachment. Disquieted by this, they lose concentration and go mad, bringing this misfortune upon themselves; it is all due to the practitioner's lack of wisdom that they suffer misfortune, not the doing of Māra. If various demonic states afflict and agitate the practitioner, and perhaps do not depart over months or years, one must simply rectify the mind with firm correct mindfulness, spare neither body nor life, harbour neither sorrow nor fear, and recite the demon-quelling dhāraṇīs from the Mahāyāna Vaipulya sūtras, reciting them silently. Keep the Three Jewels in mind. If one emerges from dhyāna-concentration, one should also recite spells to protect oneself, repent with shame and conscience, and recite the Prātimokṣa. The deviant cannot infringe upon the correct; over time they will naturally vanish. Demonic affairs are numerous and cannot be fully spoken of; one must recognize them well.
