Second, explaining the methods of curing illness: Having deeply understood the arising and source of the illness, one should employ methods to cure it. As for the methods of curing illness, there are indeed many paths; to state the essentials, they do not go beyond the two expedient means of calming and contemplation. What are the marks of curing illness by using calming? One master says: 'Merely settle the mind and stop it on the diseased area, and it will be able to cure the illness. Why is this? The mind is the master of this period of karmic retribution, just as when a king arrives at a place, the band of thieves scatters.' Another master says: 'One inch below the navel is called *udāna*, termed here the cinnabar field (dantian). If one can calm the mind and guard this without scattering, after a long time, many ailments will be cured.' Another master says: 'Constantly calm the mind on the soles of the feet, whether walking, standing, sitting, or lying down, and it will be able to cure illness. Why is this? It is because the four great elements are disharmonious that humans have many illnesses. This is caused by the mind-consciousness focusing upward, thereby throwing the four great elements out of harmony. If one settles the mind below, the four great elements will naturally become harmonized and the many illnesses will be eliminated.' Another master says: 'Simply know that all dharmas are empty and non-existent, do not grasp the marks of illness, and abide in serene calming; this will cure many ailments. Why is this? It is because the mind's conceptualization stirs up the four great elements that illness arises. If the mind is stilled and harmonious, the many illnesses will be cured. Thus the *Vimalakīrti Sūtra* says: “What is the root of illness? It is called clinging to conditions. How does one sever clinging to conditions? It is said: by having nothing attained in the mind.”' Such various explanations of the marks of curing illness by calming are manifold. Therefore know that cultivating the method of calming well can cure many illnesses.
