If a person has committed major prohibitions and fears that it will hinder dhyāna-concentration, even if they do not cultivate the various rituals according to the sūtras, but merely generate deep shame and conscience, confess their past offenses before the Three Jewels, sever the mind of continuous [transgression], sit upright constantly, contemplate the emptiness of the nature of offenses, and remain mindful of the Buddhas of the ten directions; and when emerging from dhyāna, single-mindedly burn incense, bow in worship, repent, recite the precepts, and chant Mahāyāna scriptures, the major offenses that hinder the Path will naturally diminish and vanish gradually. Thereby śīla becomes pure, and dhyāna-concentration develops. Hence the *Sūtra of Wondrous and Supreme Concentration* says: "If a person has committed major offenses, becomes fearful in mind, and wishes to eradicate them, aside from dhyāna-concentration, nothing else can eradicate them." Such a person should gather the mind and sit constantly in an unoccupied, quiet place, and chant Mahāyāna sūtras; all major offenses will be eradicated completely, and the various dhyānas and samādhis will naturally manifest before them.
