Second, the sufficiency of clothing and food. Regarding clothing, there are three methods: First, as with the Great Being of the Snowy Mountains, any single garment that covers the body is sufficient, because he does not travel among the world of people and has perfected the power of forbearance. Second, as with Kāśyapa constantly adopting the dhūta practices, keeping only three robes made of discarded rags and hoarding no extras. Third, in very cold lands, or for those whose power of forbearance is not yet perfected, the Tathāgata also permits keeping things like the hundred-and-one items beyond the three robes, but one must declare them purified and know moderation and contentment; if one excessively craves and accumulates, it will disturb the mind and hinder the Path.
