悔者，悔能成蓋。若掉無悔，則不成蓋。何以故？掉時未在緣中故。後欲入定時，方悔前所作，憂惱覆心，故名為蓋。但悔有二種：一者、因掉後生悔，如前所說。二者、如作大重罪人，常懷怖畏，悔箭入心，堅不可拔。如偈說：

As for regret, regret can form a hindrance. If there is restlessness without regret, then it does not form a hindrance. Why? Because while being restless, one is not yet engaged with [the meditation] object. Later, when one wishes to enter concentration, only then does one regret what was previously done; worry and distress cover the mind, and therefore it is called a hindrance. But there are two kinds of regret: First, regret arising after restlessness, as explained previously. Second, like a person who has committed great, heavy sins and constantly harbors dread; the arrow of regret enters their heart, firm and impossible to extract. As a verse says:
