1.49

「不應作而作，應作而不作，
悔惱火所燒，後世墮惡道。
若人罪能悔，悔已莫復憂，
如是心安樂，不應常念著。
若有二種悔，若應作不作，
不應作而作，是則愚人相。
不以心悔故，不作而能作，
諸惡事已作，不能令不作。」

"Doing what should not be done,
Failing to do what should be done,
Burned by the fire of regret and distress,
In a future life one falls into the evil realms.
If a person can regret their offenses,
Having regretted, they should no longer worry;
In this way the mind is peaceful and happy,
One should not constantly dwell on them.
If there are these two kinds of regret,
Failing to do what should be done
And doing what should not be done,
This is the mark of a foolish person.
It is not because of a regretful mind
That one can do what was left undone;
All the bad deeds having already been done,
One cannot make them undone."
