'Whether pleasant or ugly': contemplating external forms, those resulting from the retribution of wholesome karma are called pleasant, and those from unwholesome karma retribution are called ugly. Furthermore, when the practitioner, following the contemplation method received from their master, contemplates external conditions as various impurities, these are called ugly forms. If the practitioner at times remembers and falsely generates notions of purity, contemplating pure forms, these are pleasant forms. Furthermore, the practitioner binds the mind to one place within their own body and contemplates that forms in the desire realm are of two kinds: first, those able to give rise to sexual desire; second, those able to give rise to anger. Those able to give rise to sexual desire are pure forms, named pleasant; those able to give rise to anger are impure forms, hence named ugly.
