10.48

「勝知勝見」者，觀心淳熟，於好色中，心不貪愛，於醜色中，心不瞋恚，但觀色四大因緣和合而生，如水沫不堅固，智慧深達假實之相。行者住是不淨門中，婬欲、瞋恚諸結使來能不隨，故名勝處。勝是不淨中淨，顛倒諸煩惱故。

'Mastering knowledge and mastering vision': when the contemplating mind is mellow and mature, within pleasant forms one's mind feels no greed or attachment, and within ugly forms one's mind feels no anger; one merely contemplates forms as being produced from the harmony of the causes and conditions of the four great elements, unstable like water foam, with wisdom deeply penetrating the characteristics of the provisional and the real. When the practitioner abides in this gate of impurity, if the fetters of sexual desire and anger arrive, they can refrain from following them; hence it is called a station of mastery. It is called mastery because it overcomes the inverted defilements of [seeing] purity within impurity.
