先釋八背捨。八背捨者：一、內有色相外觀色，是初背捨；二、內無色相外觀色，是二背捨；三、淨背捨身作證，是三背捨；四、虛空處背捨；五、識處背捨；六、不用處背捨；七、非有想非無想背捨；八、滅受想背捨。

First, we explain the eight liberations. As for the eight liberations: first, having internal physical marks, one contemplates external forms—this is the first liberation; second, lacking internal physical marks, one contemplates external forms—this is the second liberation; third, personally realizing the pure liberation—this is the third liberation; fourth, the liberation of the sphere of boundless space; fifth, the liberation of the sphere of boundless consciousness; sixth, the liberation of the sphere of nothingness; seventh, the liberation of the sphere of neither-perception-nor-non-perception; eighth, the liberation of the cessation of perception and feeling.
