Second, as for vigor, there are two kinds: first, physical vigor; second, mental vigor. If a practitioner is able to cultivate the twelve dhūtas, that is possessing complete physical and mental vigor. As the Buddha told Kāśyapa: 'An araṇya monk, being far removed from the two attachments, pure in body and mind, practices the dhūtas. As for the dhūtas, there are twelve practices: first, dwelling in an araṇya; second, always practicing begging for food; third, begging for food sequentially; fourth, observing the practice of a single meal; fifth, eating measured amounts of food; sixth, not drinking juices after noon; seventh, wearing soiled robes; eighth, possessing only three robes; ninth, staying among charnel grounds; tenth, lodging beneath a tree; eleventh, sitting in the open; twelfth, always sitting and not lying down. These are called the twelve dhūtas.' As explained in the Dhūta Sūtra, this should be expounded broadly here. 'Dhūta' means shaking off, because it shakes off all unwholesome states of body and mind. If when cultivating dhyāna one practices these methods, this is called non-negligent practice, possessing complete physical and mental vigor. One should know that this person can attain the noble fruits of the three vehicles, let alone mundane dhyāna-concentrations.
