Fourth, ceasing all worldly engagements and activities: Worldly engagements are numerous, but briefly speaking there are four: First, ceasing engagements concerning livelihood—that is, not engaging in any conditioned undertakings. Second, ceasing engagements concerning human relationships—that is, not pursuing secular people, friends, and relatives, severing social interactions. Third, ceasing engagements concerning craftsmanship and technical skills—that is, not engaging in worldly crafts, medical prescriptions, spells and medicines, divination and physiognomy, calligraphy, or calculation and mathematics. Fourth, ceasing engagements concerning scholarly pursuits—that is, recitation, listening to lectures, philosophical debates, and so forth, are all abandoned. This is ceasing all worldly engagements. Why? Because if engagements are manifold, the cultivation of concentration will be neglected; the mind will become distracted and difficult to collect, and concentration cannot be attained.
