First, excess and deficiency in the sensation's substance: when the sensation of movement arises, the body may move, hands may rise, and feet may follow suit; an onlooker sees the person nodding as if asleep or as if possessed by a ghost, with body and hands moving erratically; or during sitting they see various anomalous realms—this is the sign of excess. As for deficiency: when movement first arises, whether above or below, before it can pervade the body, it gradually disappears and deteriorates, so that one completely loses the realm; when sitting one feels desolate, with no Dharma to sustain the body—this is the sign of deficiency.
