In this way, corrupt discourses proliferate and throw the correct Dharma into disarray. When someone hears and accepts them, corrupt teachings defile their mind: having internally realized various methods of corrupt dhyāna, samādhi, wisdom, eradication [of defilements], and merits, they externally display boundless eloquence and awe-inspiring presence to transform beings, thereby winning fame, retinues, offerings, veneration, praise, and other advantages. For this reason the Scripture of the Ninety-Six Paths states: 'When a person expounds the Dharma and spirit-deities augment their power, none of those who hear fail to believe and accept it, and all who see give rise to affection and respect.' Because of such matters, they grasp with deep conviction, unable to turn back, and their corrupt, inverted practices are of various kinds, not just one. If it is like this, one should know that such a person is far removed from the noble Dharma; when their body breaks up and life ends, they will fall into the three bad destinations. These matters are expounded at length in the Larger Perfection of Wisdom Scripture and the Mahāyāna Commentary. If one wishes to know the signs of spirit-deities, one should consult the Scripture of the Ninety-Six Paths and make careful, detailed comparisons and distinctions; then the matter can be known.
