Furthermore, although this person is born among gods or humans, they are secretly and constantly bound to the corrupt paths of Māra: they delight in being close to corrupt teachers, delight in hearing corrupt teachings, and delight in practicing corrupt paths, making offerings to, associating with, praising, and lauding those who cultivate corrupt practices. When they see someone practicing the three vehicles correctly, they do not delight in associating with them, or they create trouble and perturbation. Hence the Lotus Sūtra says: 'Whether Māra, Māra's sons, Māra's daughters, Māra's subjects, or those possessed by Māra.' The Larger Perfection of Wisdom Scripture also says: 'Whether Māra-gods or Māra-humans.' Therefore, one knows that although this person is born among humans or gods, they remain bound to Māra and constantly give rise to Māra's activities; even if they leave household life, they still create Māra's activities. Hence the Nirvāṇa Sūtra says: 'In the five hundred years after the Buddha's passing, the path of Māra will gradually flourish; Māra will become a monk and throw the Buddhadharma into disarray.' Likewise, the Mahāsaṃnipāta Sūtra broadly discerns the signs of Māra's activities; these should be distinguished in detail here. Just as the corrupt signs in the single sensation of movement are like this, the other seven sensations also possess these corrupt signs, and one should discern them. Just as corrupt signs in fundamental dhyāna are like this, in the other fourteen doors of dhyāna and various dhyānas, whether in phenomenal matters or in principle, there are corrupt and counterfeit phenomena; their matters are so varied they cannot be fully expounded.
