As the Nirvāṇa Sūtra says: "If one wishes to know genuine gold, it should be tested in three ways, namely, burning, striking, and grinding." Practitioners are also like this: difficult to distinguish and recognize. If one wishes to distinguish them, they must also be tested in three ways, namely: one should work together with them; if one does not know them by working together, one should dwell with them for a long time; if one does not know them by dwelling with them for a long time, one observes them with wisdom. Now, I borrow this intention to clarify the corrupt and correct marks of dhyāna absorption. For instance, when a moving sensation arises, if corrupt and correct are not yet clear, one should enter deeply into a concentrated mind, neither grasping nor rejecting within the realm that has arisen, but simply stabilizing with a level mind. If it is a wholesome root, the deeper the power of absorption becomes, the more the wholesome root arises; if it is the work of Māra, it will naturally disintegrate before long.
