Second, explaining the four cultivations in terms of the gate of contemplation: 1. Phenomenal contemplation, namely ānāpāna, contemplation of impurity, and so forth, which is phenomenal cultivation; 2. Principle contemplation, namely contemplations of emptiness, signlessness, and so forth, which is principle cultivation; 3. Phenomenal-and-principle contemplation, namely dual contemplation of the two truths, which is phenomenal-and-principle cultivation; 4. Neither-phenomenal-nor-principle contemplation, namely the correct contemplation of the Middle Way, which is neither-phenomenal-nor-principle cultivation. Now, in order to establish the aforementioned meaning of the indeterminate arising of dhyāna from the gate of cessation, cultivation is explained solely in terms of the four cessations; within each cultivation there are four kinds of indeterminate arising of dhyāna, and therefore within the four kinds of cultivation there are altogether sixteen kinds of indeterminate arising of dhyāna. When the practitioner skillfully recognizes these marks, they will naturally understand that both phenomenal and principle cultivations commonly give rise to all dhyānas and samādhis, without doubts in mind.
