Answer: There are two kinds of arising of dhyāna: first, attained through cultivating present expedient means; second, the arising of wholesome roots from past lives. If phenomenal cultivation in turn gives rise to phenomenal dhyāna, it is mostly attained through cultivation. If phenomenal cultivation gives rise to various dhyānas and samādhis of principle, or of neither phenomena nor principle, all are the arising of wholesome roots of dhyāna absorption from past lives. Just as the Sarvāstivādins distinguish two kinds of cultivation: first, attainment-cultivation; second, practice-cultivation. Attainment-cultivation refers to what was not previously attained. Practice-cultivation refers to what had already been attained previously. The present case is of this sort; therefore, in terms of phenomenal cultivation, there are four kinds of indeterminate arising of dhyāna.
