3.47

止為初門，善、惡二事之中，必有其一，行者應當明識其相，取捨之間不乖正道，故須分別。今就善、惡根性中，即為二意：一、明驗善根性；二、明驗惡根性。然論善惡發之前後，各逐其人，未必定前善而後惡也。

Cessation is the initial gate. Between the two matters of wholesome and unwholesome, one will certainly occur. The practitioner must clearly recognize their signs so that in choosing and discarding they do not diverge from the correct path; hence, it is necessary to distinguish them. Now, regarding the wholesome and unwholesome root-dispositions, there are two points: first, to examine and verify the wholesome root-dispositions; second, to examine and verify the unwholesome root-dispositions. However, regarding the order in which the wholesome and unwholesome arise, it varies with each individual; it is not necessarily predetermined that the wholesome comes first and the unwholesome follows.
