1. Explaining the arising of the wholesome roots of recollecting the response Buddha: within a calm, concentrated mind in the desire realm or the anāgamya stage, one suddenly recollected the Buddha's merits and immediately thinks: 'In past asaṃkhyeya kalpas, for the sake of all sentient beings, the Tathāgata fully practiced the six pāramitās. Because of all merits and wisdom, his body has the marks, secondary characteristics, and radiance, and his mind has wisdom that illuminates fully. Subduing the Māra adversaries, he awakened by himself without a teacher, enlightened himself and enlightens others, turned the wheel of the correct Dharma, and universally saved all. Even after entering nirvāṇa, his relics and scriptural teachings broadly benefit sentient beings. Merits such as these are immeasurable and boundless.' When reflecting in this way, a mind of reverence and love immediately arises, samādhi develops, and one enters concentration with serenity and joy; or within concentration one sees the physical marks of the Buddha's body and a wholesome mind unfolds, or one hears the Buddha expounding the Dharma and the mind is purified in faithful understanding. Such superior, wholesome realms are not singular. These are the signs of the arising of the wholesome roots of recollecting the response Buddha.
