Therefore Māra is called 'killer,' and is also called 'flower-arrow,' as well as 'five arrows,' because it shoots at the five sense faculties. Within each single faculty there are three kinds of objects that confront the faculty to trouble the practitioner, so the five faculties together have fifteen kinds of objects. Among the three in visible form: first, forms favorable to feelings, such as transforming into the forms of parents, siblings, images of Buddhas, or handsome men and women, desirable objects that make the person's mind attached; second, forms adverse to feelings, such as transforming into the forms of tigers, wolves, lions, or rākṣasas, various fearsome images coming to terrify the practitioner; third, forms neither adverse nor favorable to feelings, merely assuming ordinary shapes and colors that neither cause one to give rise to love nor cause one to give rise to fear, all of which are able to agitate the human mind and cause one to lose dhyāna-concentration; hence it is called māra. In the remaining faculties, distinction should also be made in this way, differing only according to the aspects of the sense objects. If the practitioner does not distinguish these deceptions and falsities, he will be ruined by them, becoming crazed and committing transgressions, stripping naked without shame, giving rise to manifold faults, destroying the wholesome deeds of others, and defaming and damaging the Three Jewels beyond full description, or sometimes contracting disease leading to death. One must be cautious and skillfully apply awareness.
