Furthermore, to explain briefly the different meanings of conquering Māra: as explained in the Mahāyāna [Treatise], "Because one attains the bodhisattva path, one conquers the affliction-Māra; because one attains the dharma-nature body, one conquers the Māra of the aggregates, realms, and entrances; because one attains the bodhisattva path and the dharma-nature body, one conquers the death-Māra; because one attains the unmoving samādhi and is autonomous and non-abiding among all dharmas, one conquers the Māra of the son of heaven of Paranirmitavaśavartin in the desire realm." In the Great Collection Sūtra, it is explained that attaining the four applications of mindfulness is conquering the four Māras. These two explanations differ in terminology but agree in meaning. The Yingluo jing explains that an equally-awakened Tathāgata has already surpassed three Māras, with only one grade of the death-Māra remaining. The Lotus [Sūtra] explains that people of the two vehicles only conquer three Māras, leaving the desire-realm son-of-heaven Māra unconquered. Thus sūtras and treatises explain this differently, yet all have profound meaning. If one understands the four Māras comprehensively, they are all eliminated completely only upon reaching bodhi. Why is this? As for the affliction-Māra, the subtle delusions of fundamental ignorance can only be severed by the wisdom of the Buddha's bodhi. As for the Māra of the aggregates, realms, and entrances, it is as when he addressed Kauṇḍinya: "Form is impermanent; through the cessation of this form, one attains eternal form. Feeling, perception, volitional formations, and consciousness are also like this." As for the death-Māra, it is as cited earlier from what is explained in the Yingluo jing. As for the desire-realm son-of-heaven Māra, only when one sits at the site of awakening does he come to wage great battle against the bodhisattva. Therefore, we know that all four Māras are completely and eternally eliminated only upon reaching bodhi.
