4.111

菩薩摩訶薩心廣大故，安住不動，修深禪定，從初發心乃至佛果，降伏四魔而作佛事，廣化眾生，心不退沒。《涅槃經》中說有八魔，《華嚴經》中說有十魔，善得其意，四魔攝盡，更無別法。諸經辨魔事眾多，略說不具足。

Because a bodhisattva-mahāsattva's mind is vast, they abide securely and unmoving, cultivating deep dhyāna absorptions; from the initial generation of the aspiration up to the fruit of Buddhahood, they subdue the four Māras and perform Buddha-work, broadly transforming sentient beings without their minds sinking or regressing. The Nirvāṇa Sūtra states that there are eight Māras, and the Avataṃsaka Sūtra states that there are ten Māras; if one grasps their meaning well, the four Māras encompass them all, and there is no separate teaching. The various sūtras distinguish the works of Māra in manifold ways, which cannot be treated exhaustively in this brief explanation.
