Briefly explaining illnesses of the four great elements: because the earth element increases, swellings, knots, and heaviness, as well as withered emaciation of the body—one hundred and one such afflictions arise. Because the water element increases, phlegm-fluid congestion and distension, indigestion of food and drink, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and so forth—one hundred and one such afflictions arise. Because the fire element increases, chills and high fever, pain in all joints and limbs, loss of taste, constipation and urinary retention, and so forth—one hundred and one such afflictions arise. Because the wind element increases, feelings of floating emptiness and trembling, aching pain and cramping, vomiting, coughing, and shortness of breath—one hundred and one such afflictions arise. Therefore a sūtra says: 'When one great element is out of harmony, one hundred and one illnesses cause distress; when the four great elements are out of harmony, four hundred and four illnesses stir together at once.' The arising of illnesses of the four great elements each has its own signs, which should be observed during sitting and in dreams; their signs are manifold and cannot be recorded in full.
