一、明利心中覺觀發者，若行人過去既不深種善根，於修定時都不發種種善法，但覺觀攀緣，念念不住，三毒之中亦無的緣，或時緣貪，或時緣瞋，或時緣癡，而所緣之事，分明了了，如是雖經年累月，而不發諸禪定，此為明利心中覺觀發相。

First, regarding the manifestation of vitarka and vicāra in a clear and sharp mind: If a practitioner in the past did not plant wholesome roots deeply, when cultivating concentration, diverse wholesome dharmas do not manifest at all; there is only vitarka and vicāra seizing conditions, not resting for a thought-moment. Among the three poisons, there is also no fixed condition: sometimes it conditions greed, sometimes anger, sometimes delusion; yet the conditioned matters are clear and distinct. Though months and years pass in this manner, various dhyāna-concentrations do not manifest. This is the mark of the manifestation of vitarka and vicāra in a clear and sharp mind.
